Nix declined an assignment to Triple-A Omaha on Monday and is now a free agent, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports. Nix was part of the Royals' roster that lost the World Series to the Giants, but he didn't play much of a role and was just an added roster spot. In fact, the 32-year-old hit just .120/.168/.157 with a home run and four RBI over 83 at-bats between the Royals, Phillies and Pirates last season. Despite his down year, he will test the free agent waters this offseason in an attempt to latch on to a big league roster, most likely as a bench player.
