Nationals manager Dusty Baker said Tuesday that Drew (abdomen) could require surgery for an undisclosed injury that could sideline him for the remainder of the season, Jorge Castillo of The Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Drew has been sidelined since July 25 with a left abdominal strain, and the Nationals' decision to transfer him to the 60-day disabled list Monday ensures he won't be activated until Sept. 29 at the earliest. In addition to the abdominal injury, it sounds like Drew is also being slowed by an unrelated issue, which may be significant enough to keep him out of the mix for a spot on the Nationals' playoff roster. Even if Drew is able to avoid surgery and return to full health in the final handful of games of the season, Wilmer Difo's emergence as a useful utility man in the second half might have already quashed Drew's chances of earning a role with the Nationals in the postseason.
