Miami Marlins starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez was diagnosed with a tear in his right shoulder Tuesday, and he will undergo season-ending arthroscopic surgery, according to MLB.com. Alvarez suffered a setback as he was rehabbing from a previous injury and a new evaluation revealed the tear. The 25-year-old won 12 games and posted a 2.65 ERA last season en route to an All-Star selection, but he has been limited to just four starts this season because of shoulder problems. "I think he's a definite out-for-the-season candidate now," manager Dan Jennings said. "To be determined. I think depending upon the actual severity of the tear and just the timetable, we'll know more after the procedure's complete. Up until game time we've had our last three All-Stars (Alvarez, Giancarlo Stanton and Dee Gordon) (need) to be shut down. It's a little frustrating when you've got quality, you don't want to see anyone injured, but certainly you don't want to see your guys get shut down for an extended period of time."
