Fernandez (16-8) threw eight brilliant innings Tuesday against the Nationals, striking out 12 while allowing just three hits and no runs.
EDGE Analysis
Fernandez carried a one-hitter into the eighth inning Monday, earning his 16th win of the year. The Marlins needed every bit of the stellar start, as their offense mustered just three hits and one run against Tanner Roark and the Nationals. Fernandez now has 253 strikeouts in 182.1 innings on the year, trailing only Max Scherzer. That represents nearly a threefold increase over the 64.2 innings he threw last year after returning from Tommy John surgery midseason, so there is some concern the Marlins will shut down their ace to avoid risking injury now that they have been officially eliminated from playoff contention.
