Fernandez (10-4) suffered through a rare beating in Saturday's 9-1 loss to the Braves despite recording eight whiffs, giving up nine runs (six earned) on eight hits and a walk over 5.2 innings.
EDGE Analysis
The hard-throwing righty couldn't figure out a Braves squad that he'd entered Saturday's game with a 4-1 career record against. Fernandez came into the sixth inning having only given up a first-inning, two-run homer to Freddie Freeman, but then unraveled when he allowed four consecutive batters to hit safely, and saw a fifth reach on a throwing error. The final blow was a 390-foot three-run shot by Jace Peterson that closed out the seven-run frame. While he's always been a more effective pitcher at home, it was still highly unusual to see the 23-year-old hit as hard as he was, especially considering the opposition. Fernandez will try to put the outing behind him when he takes on the Reds next Friday.
