Cain (3-11) tossed five innings of two-run ball Thursday, walking none and striking out two in a losing effort against the Cardinals.
EDGE Analysis
Cain was called upon to fill in for Madison Bumgarner (illness) on short notice Thursday. The former starter didn't necessarily pitch poorly in his return to the rotation, but it certainly wasn't enough to convince manager Bruce Bochy to give his veteran another chance at starting regularly. The Giants are currently operating with a six-man rotation, so Cain should head back to the bullpen assuming Bumgarner's illness doesn't cost him any more time.
