Alvarez (shoulder) is set to begin a rehab assignment with High-A Stockton within the next few days, MLB.com's Jane Lee reports.
EDGE Analysis
Alvarez hasn't been able to pitch for the A's all season while he's endured multiple setbacks in his recovery from July 2015 surgery to repair a tear in his throwing shoulder. For the third time this season, Alvarez will attempt to head out on a rehab assignment after his previous two efforts were thwarted, meaning a return to the A's before the conclusion of the campaign is still on the table. The right-hander threw 13 pitches during a simulated outing in Arizona on Saturday, with his fastball checking in around 89-to-91 miles per hour. If he continues to make velocity gains and avoid any further setbacks, Alvarez could serve as a bullpen option for the Athletics later in September.
