Rays designated RHP Heath Bell for assignment. Bell surrendered three runs on three hits and a walk in Saturday's loss to the Yankees, and that was evidently the final straw. The big right-hander put up a 7.27 ERA over 13 appearances for the Rays. No one will touch Bell on waivers due to his salary, but he won't have trouble getting a shot somewhere once he becomes a free agent.

Heath Bell was pounded for five runs by the Twins in 1 2/3 innings of relief on Thursday. It's a good thing the Rays signed Grant Balfour because Bell may well have gotten a chance to close otherwise. He's given up 11 earned runs in his last six appearances, and he's currently sporting an 8.25 ERA.

Rays acquired RHP Heath Bell and cash considerations from the Diamondbacks in a three-team trade. The Rays will only be responsible for $5.5 million of Bell's $9 million salary for 2014, as the Diamondbacks and Marlins will pay the rest. It will be interesting to see if the Rays give him a chance at the closer role, as his $9 million option for 2015 vests with 55 games finished in 2014. The 36-year-old had some issues with the home run ball this past season, but made improvements with his strikeout and walk rates. Given the Rays' success with previous reclamation projects, he will be an interesting name to watch in fantasy leagues.

Heath Bell gave up two homers and three runs in his inning of relief Wednesday against the Padres. Bell didn't take a blown save or a loss, but he did put the game pretty much out of reach, entering a 2-1 game in the eighth and leaving with the score 5-1. Any chance of him replacing Brad Ziegler as closer is likely gone now.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, reliever Heath Bell was recently placed on revocable waivers. It's a common thing this time of year and doesn't mean a transaction is coming. Bell has a 3.88 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 62/13 K/BB ratio in 55 2/3 innings this season -- pretty good numbers considering how often he's been hit hard. The 35-year-old has yielded 10 home runs.

Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said before Thursday's game that the team doesn't have a closer at this point. The club planned to use Heath Bell at closer while J.J. Putz rebuilt his arm strength, but Bell has blown back-to-back save chances. Putz figures to be the best bet for saves in Arizona over the long haul, but the D'Backs will play the matchups for now.

Heath Bell blew a save chance Thursday against the Mets. After entering the bottom of the 13th inning with a 3-2 lead, Bell was able to get Marlon Byrd on a ground out and strike out Josh Satin swinging for the second out. However, Anthony Recker took Bell deep to keep the game alive. Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson plans to use Bell in save situations for now while J.J. Putz rebuilds his arm strength, but that arrangement might not last long.

Heath Bell earned his 15th save of the season Wednesday in the Diamondbacks' defeat of the Mets. Bell allowed a two-out single to John Buck but got Andrew Brown to fly out to end it. The big righty is filling in at closer for the D'Backs until Heath Bell rebuilds some arm strength and is worth owning in standard fantasy leagues until he inevitably screws it up. Bell has a 4.45 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 35 total appearances this season.
