Petit was designated for assignment by the Angels on Monday.
EDGE Analysis
Petit was designated for assignment after the Angels agreed to a one-year deal with outfielder Ryan LaMarre. At 31 years old, Petit appeared in 89 games with the Angels in 2016 as a utility infielder and finished the year slashing .245/.299/.348. Assuming he accepts his assignment, he will likely begin the 2017 season with Triple-A Salt Lake.

Petit is getting his first career start in the outfield (left field) Wednesday against the Royals, the Los Angeles Times' Pedro Moura reports.
EDGE Analysis
He already has second base and shortstop eligibility in most formats, so it's not as if Petit lacked for positional value, but if he adds outfield eligibility it certainly wouldn't hurt. That said, his defensive versatility is about all he brings to the table, as he is hitting a very empty .276 with two home runs and fewer than 20 RBI and runs scored in 145 plate appearances.

Petit hit his second home run of the season, a grand slam, in Monday's loss to the Astros.
EDGE Analysis
Petit continues to make the most of the chance he is getting with Andrelton Simmons injured. Although he has a rough 7:25 BB:K, he now has two home runs and 10 doubles to give him a sharp .446 slugging percentage. As long as he hits for this kind of power, the Angels will have to find a spot for him in the infield just to keep his bat in the lineup. He has 15 career starts at third base and 21 at second base, versatility that will only help his case.

Petit is out of the lineup Sunday against the Astros.
EDGE Analysis
Petit has taken over as the Angels' primary shortstop since Andrelton Simmons (thumb) hit the DL, but he'll get the afternoon off after starting 13 of the past 14 contests. He's hit for an acceptable batting average and doesn't look to be at risk of losing out on regular at-bats, but his dearth of power and limited impact on the basepaths renders him a low-ceiling commodity in most formats.

Petit will make his second straight start at shortstop Sunday against the Mariners.
EDGE Analysis
With Andrelton Simmons (thumb) on the DL, the depth-starved Angels will be forced to turn to Petit and Brendan Ryan to man shortstop for the next several weeks, neither of whom profile as appealing options at the position. Petit seems to have the leg up on the job battle for now, but as a glove-first player who owns a .258 batting average and two homers over 209 career MLB plate appearances, the 31-year-old could struggle to provide much fantasy value.

Petit was recalled by the Angels on Friday, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.
EDGE Analysis
Cliff Pennington was placed on the disabled list Friday after leaving Thursday's contest against St. Louis with a hamstring injury, leaving the Angels thin in terms of infield depth. Petit slashed .327/.377/.382 in 55 at-bats at Triple-A Salt Lake prior to being recalled Friday and he's a career .254/.282/.358 hitter at the big league level.

Petit was assigned to minor league camp Monday, Jeff Fletcher of the OC Register reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 31-year-old has made 57 appearances in the majors over the last two seasons with the Yankees and Astros, but he won't start out the 2016 season with that same opportunity while Johnny Giavotella, Cliff Pennington, and Reynaldo Navarro all considered better options at second base.

Petit has signed a minor league contract with the Angels that includes an invitation to spring training, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Petit scattered 20 appearances with the Yankees across the 2015 campaign, putting together a tepid .167/.217/.238 in 42 at-bats. Other than a three-game rehab stint with High-A Tampa, he spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and could land in similar climes in the Angels' organization in 2016. However, the 31-year-old will be given a chance to land a utility spot with the big club.

The Yankees have recalled Petit from Triple-A. Petit will add a utility option to the Yankees' bench as part of a flurry of moves made Friday. In 18 games for the Yankees this season, he's hit .184 with five RBI and a 3:15 BB:K over 38 at-bats.

Petit was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, MLB.com's Bryan Hoch reports. Stephen Drew's recent reinstatement from the paternity list appears to have made Petit expendable, as the Yankees already have another utility infielder in their ranks in Jose Pirela. The 30-year-old Petit will settle back into an organizational depth role at Triple-A.
