McGowan had been competing for a role in the starting rotation, but it appears he'll make the roster as a long relief option. With several bullpen options starting the season on the DL, the door was open for McGowan to snag one of the final available roster spots. Unless he is able to eventually work his way into the starting rotation, the 34-year-old's fantasy value will be limited, however.

McGowan was outrighted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday. McGowan was designated for assignment Thursday. He has a 6.94 ERA and a 21:20 K:BB ratio in 23.1 innings with the Phillies this season.

He was used in long relief Tuesday and gave up six runs on seven hits and two walks against the Orioles, essentially punching his ticket off the 40-man roster. Jake Diekman was recalled to take McGowan's spot in the Phillies' bullpen.

McGowan allowed six runs on seven hits over 3.1 innings in Tuesday's 19-3 loss to the Orioles. McGowan allowed five home runs and saw his ERA balloon to 6.94. The Phillies were forced to stick with him after starter Jerome Williams left the game in the first inning with a hamstring strain.

McGowan was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday. McGowan will replace Jake Diekman, who was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday. The Phillies hope to bring Diekman back before long, meaning McGowan's stay in the big-league bullpen could be a short one. McGowan has really struggled this season, allowing nine earned runs and a whopping 16 walks through 14 innings.

McGowan has been sent down to Triple-A Lehigh after clearing waivers, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports. McGowan was unspectacular to say the least in his only start for the Phillies and will likely only be seen in a bullpen role going forward unless they get truly desperate.

McGowan lasted just 3.1 innings Thursday against Miami, giving up four runs on three hits and four walks while striking out four. His first start of the season did not go too well, illustrating why McGowan started only eight games over the past two seasons with Toronto. He may get another crack at starting next week against the Cardinals, but if that doesn't work out, it's hard to imagine the Phillies being very patient with McGowan, who's probably best served in middle relief at this point in his career.

McGowan has been tabbed as the starting pitcher for Thursday's game against the Marlins, Stephen Gross of the Morning Call reports. Sean O'Sullivan had been lined up to make his third start of the season Thursday, but the Phillies placed him on the disabled list with a knee injury. McGowan will take over in his stead the first time around and could be a candidate to earn more starts for the time being until the starting rotation returns to full health.

The Phillies are expected to use McGowan in a relief role, the team's official site reports. McGowan signed with the Phillies on Saturday after getting released by the Dodgers last week. He will likely see most of his work in the middle innings.
