Gee has reportedly been named the fifth starter, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. Gee, who was to open the year in the bullpen, received a reprieve when Zack Wheeler was lost for the year with a torn UCL. Despite a strong late-push from Rafael Montero, Gee was able to hold him off. But, rumors persist that Gee may get dealt early in the season, and with the team's pitching depth, his rotation spot is less than secure.

Gee had his best start of the spring, allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three in seven innings. Gee is still battling Rafael Montero for the fifth starter spot, but likely has a leg up on the spot due to Montero's ability to pitch out of the pen, which is not suited to Gee's strengths.

Gee will begin the season in the starting rotation according to manager Terry Collins, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. With Zack Wheeler suffering a torn UCL that will cost him the entire 2015 season, the fifth spot in the team's rotation became available. Gee was being viewed as a long reliever and possible trade candidate earlier in camp, but he'll spend the rest of the spring preparing as a starter. The 28-year-old posted a 4.00 ERA (4.52 FIP), 6.2 K/9, and 2.8 BB/9 in 22 starts last season.

Gee may return to the Mets' rotation with Zack Wheeler (torn UCL) lost for the season, but that is not yet set in stone. Gee was bumped from the rotation as the sixth starter when the Mets were healthy. The loss of Wheeler creates a huge hole that Gee might fill. However, GM Sandy Alderson did not state at his press conference Monday that Gee is a lock to replace Wheeler, so Rafael Montero, Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz all may be in the mix. Gee is making $5.3 million and is ill-suited to the pen while Syndergaard and Matz both could remain in the minors a few weeks, giving the Mets another year of control, which gives Gee a lead in the competition to replace Wheeler,

Gee is not currently viewed by Toronto as a candidate to acquire to fill the open rotation spot created by the loss of Marcus Stroman (torn ACL) for the year, Joel Sherman of the NY Post reports. Toronto's view may change late in the spring. But for now. Gee looks locked into a bullpen spot with the Mets.

Gee threw 2.2 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief in his first bullpen outing of the spring Saturday. Gee is transitioning from starting to relieving with six starters in camp for the Mets. With Yu Darvish possibly lost for the year, the Rangers may rekindle their interest in Gee. But for now, Gee is stuck in the Mets' bullpen.

The Mets' Opening Day starter in 2014, Gee missed close to two months with a lat strain and struggled to a 5.10 ERA and .275 BAA in 13 second-half starts (77.2 innings). He'll receive a nice raise in salary regardless, though it may be another team that pays Gee his $5.3 million, as the Mets are said to be shopping him around.

The Mets are "aggressively shopping" Gee with the Rangers and Royals two potential suitors, ESPN New York reports. Gee along with Bartolo Colon and Jonathon Niese are all in play with one starter to be moved by New York. It looks like Gee, who is expected to make around $5 million this year and under control for two more years, is the one who is being pushed the hardest by New York in any trade talks.
