Dietrich hasn't played since leaving Tuesday's game against the Brewers with a left shoulder injury, an issue he's dealt with on and off all season. He likely would have sat even if healthy Friday, though, with lefty Steven Brault on the mound for Pittsburgh.

"He's been dealing with a shoulder [injury] off and on all year," manager David Bell said. "It's just kind of some wear and tear in the shoulder. We're going to try to figure out what the best plan is for the rest of the year. He was taken out for that."

With the Reds trading away Scooter Gennett and Yasiel Puig over the last two days, there's now some room for Dietrich to play over the last two months, presuming that his knee is fully healed. The Reds will also want to see more from Josh VanMeter, Philip Ervin and Jose Peraza down the stretch, so don't assume that Dietrich will be an everyday starter.
