Smith (forearm) will be checked out by a doctor in New York on Monday for a second opinion, the Boston Globe reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith said the pain he's feeling now is "very similar" to what he felt in spring training when he was shut down with a strained right flexor muscle. He noted some discomfort in his delivery, particularly his slider. After working his way back from the initial soreness, Smith was activated in early May, but has been unable to pitch on consecutive days and has needed multiple days to recover before being used again.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said Friday he would be surprised if Smith (forearm) needs surgery, the Boston Globe's Alex Speier reports.
EDGE Analysis
He had an MRI Friday after landing on the 15-day DL, but the results have not yet been announced. Farrell said the symptoms do not indicate surgery will be necessary, but of course that could change in a hurry. Regardless, he should be considered out indefinitely.

The Red Sox placed Smith (forearm) on the disabled list Friday, Evan Drellich of the Boston Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
It was reported earlier this week that Smith was dealing with forearm soreness, and his placement on the disabled list signals that he did not make much progress over the last few days. The extent of his setback has not yet been determined, but he will be eligible to be activated May 30. Noe Ramirez was recalled to take Smith's place on the roster.

Smith is battling lingering forearm soreness and he could require another stint on the disabled list if his condition does not improve, Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
This is concerning news for Smith as the former shutdown reliever has been battling forearm issues since spring training and he has needed significant rest between appearances since coming off the DL in early May. Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that Smith will be evaluated following his next outing, at which point his status should come into focus a bit more.

Smith has pitched just three times since begin activated off the disabled list two weeks ago, WEEI.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Since making his debut May 3, Smith has gone six days and five days, respectively between starts. He said he's still feeling the effects of a forearm injury that cropped up during spring training. "Sometimes I feel great the next day," he told WEEI.com. "Sometimes there may be a hint of something there. They told me that's what happens with these types of injuries, so we're just taking it day by day." Signed as high-leverage situation reliever, who has a wipeout slider, Smith considers himself a work-in-progress at this point of the season.

Smith pitched a scoreless inning, striking out one, in Tuesday night's loss to the White Sox.
EDGE Analysis
Smith, who was activated off the disabled list earlier in the day, was making his season debut after recovering from a forearm strain. He came on in the seventh inning of a close game, which will be the typical pattern of usage for the right hander.

Smith (forearm) was activated from the disabled list ahead of Tuesday's game against the White Sox, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.
EDGE Analysis
Coming off a fantastic 2015 campaign in Seattle, Smith missed the first month of the season due to a flexor mass in his right forearm. He figures to get most of his work in the seventh or eighth innings, competing with Koji Uehara and Junichi Tazawa for hold opportunities. Smith pitched 1.2 flawless innings during his brief rehab assignment with Double-A Portland.

Smith (forearm) is expected to be activated for Tuesday's game against the White Sox, the Boston Globe reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith has met all his targets while on rehab and is ready to help the major league bullpen. Boston cleared the deck for his return when it optioned Marco Hernandez to Triple-A Pawtucket. Smith is expected to work in a seventh or eighth inning role, but manager John Farrell will be careful in how frequently he's used at the outset.

Smith (forearm) tossed a perfect inning during a rehabilitation outing for Double-A Portland on Saturday. He struck out one and threw six of his nine pitches for strikes.
EDGE Analysis
The outing checks off another box for Smith, who made appearances on consecutive nights. He'll be evaluated Sunday and could be activated as early as Tuesday when the Red Sox begin a series in Chicago against the White Sox.

Smith (forearm) is expected to be activated next Tuesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith will embark on a rehab assignment and is expected to pitch on back-to-back days with Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday and Saturday. Assuming all goes according to plan, he'll join the big league club early next week and should occupy a role setting up Boston closer Craig Kimbrel.
