According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, Carlos Pena was claimed off waivers by an unknown team. The claiming team has 48 hours to work out a trade with the Cubs. Pena, 33, currently projects as a Type B free agent this winter.

Carlos Pena has been placed on waivers. The Cubs did not trade the impending free agent slugger at July's non-waiver deadline and seem unlikely to work out a deal here in August. Unless the right team is able to claim him, Pena should remain in Chicago.

Carlos Pena is not in the Cubs' Friday afternoon lineup against the Cardinals. With St. Louis sending southpaw Jaime Garcia to the hill, lefty-masher Jeff Baker will start in Pena's place. He'll be back in the lineup on Saturday.

Carlos Pena would like to return to the Cubs next season. The Cubs will go hard after Prince Fielder, but could turn to Pena if they lose out on the sweepstakes. Pena has hit .224/.338/.445 with 20 home runs and 51 RBI through 101 games this year while playing above-average defense. He may command a multi-year this offseason, and it remains to be seen if Chicago will be willing to make a longterm commitment.

The Cubs are informing teams that they will not trade Carlos Pena before the trade deadline, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney. If true, we find this rather curious. Pena, who signed a one-year, $10 million contract over the winter, isn't of much use to the floundering Cubs at the moment when they could potentially reel in a prospect for him. The 33-year-old has hit .224/.338/.445 with 20 home runs and 51 RBI through 101 games this year. Re-upping Pena over the winter would obviously rule out the Cubs from going after impending marquee free agents Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder.

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that Cubs first baseman Carlos Pena "will almost surely be moved." The Diamondbacks have been craving consistent production at first base all season and could put together an offer. Pena, 33, has hit .221/.334/.445 with 20 home runs and 51 RBI through 97 games this year. He inked a one-year, $10 million free agent contract with Chicago over the winter.

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times writes that there is a "growing sense" that the Cubs are considering bringing back Carlos Pena for next season. Pena, who signed a one-year, $10 million contract over the winter, could draw interest from teams at the trade deadline, and the Cubs will certainly listen. But, they could be inclined to hang on to him and re-sign him to a new deal. Re-upping with Pena would obviously rule out the Cubs in going after impending marquee free agents Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder.

Carlos Pena went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in Chicago's 6-1 win over the Phillies on Monday. The three-hit night was just Pena's third in 92 games this season. However, he's now up to 20 home runs, and more or less providing the Cubs with what they should have expected when they signed him to a $10 million deal last offseason.
