Wainwright was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a right shoulder strain.
EDGE Analysis
The Cardinals had said after Wainwright's latest disastrous start Tuesday in Miami that he would land on the IL and the move is now official. It could be a fairly length absence, as even once he's deemed healthy Wainwright clearly has some stuff to work on. He'll likely require multiple rehab starts before the Cards consider re-inserting him into their rotation.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said after Tuesday's loss to the Marlins that Wainwright will be placed on the 15-day injured list with shoulder inflammation, Ben Frederickson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
EDGE Analysis
Wainwright could use a break after getting torched again Tuesday for seven earned runs on seven hits and two walks over just 3.1 innings. He's surrendered 20 combined earned runs across his last three starts and his season ERA has ballooned to 7.66. The 41-year-old right-hander seems certain to retire at the conclusion of the 2023 campaign, and it's unclear how many major-league starts he may have left.

Manager Oliver Marmol said that Wainwright will make his next scheduled start, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Wainwright was crushed for six earned runs across only 1.2 innings Thursday against the Astros to take his third loss of the season. That follows an outing in the London Series against the Cubs during which he allowed seven earned runs across three frames. Despite those significant struggles, it appears that the Cardinals will stick with Wainwright as a regular member of the rotation. He's currently projected to take the mound Tuesday at Miami.

Wainwright (3-2) allowed seven runs on 11 hits and a walk without recording a strikeout over three-plus innings, taking the loss in Saturday's London Series game versus the Cubs.
EDGE Analysis
Wainwright gave up a pair of solo home runs to Ian Happ, and the rest of the Cubs' lineup presented plenty of challenges too. Wainwright hadn't pitched fewer than five innings in any of his first eight starts this year, but this will be one to forget for the veteran. He's struggled to a 6.56 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 24:14 K:BB through 46.2 innings. His next start will likely come at home, though with Jack Flaherty (hip) questionable, it's unclear if Wainwright will face the Astros or the Yankees.

Wainwright (3-1) picked up the win in Saturday's 5-3 victory over the Mets, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out three.
EDGE Analysis
Homers by Brandon Nimmo and Luis Guillorme accounted for all the damage off Wainwright, but the 41-year-old got enough run support to weather them. He tossed 93 pitches (53 strikes) en route to his first quality start of the season and first win since May 23, and this was the first time in eight starts he even managed to finish the sixth inning. Wainwright's numbers have largely fallen off a cliff in 2023, and his 5.56 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 11.9 percent strikeout rate give him little fantasy appeal outside of deep formats where nearly every pitcher with a rotation spot is rostered. His next start lines up to take place an ocean away, as he's set to take the bump against the Cubs next weekend in London.

Wainwright allowed three runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out two over 5.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Reds on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Wainwright put three runners on base in the sixth inning, which led to the tying run. The 41-year-old has limited opponents to three runs in each of his last three starts, but he doesn't have a win to show for it. He's yet to complete six innings in any of his seven starts this season, posting a 5.79 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 21:11 K:BB over 37.1 frames. Wainwright's projected to make his next start on the road versus the Mets.

Wainwright didn't factor in the decision against Texas on Monday, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three batters over 5.1 innings.
EDGE Analysis
This was by no means a virtuoso performance for the veteran, but he rebounded from a three-run second frame to give the Cardinals decent length and allow them to stay competitive. Wainwright needed 106 pitches to get through 5.1 innings, though he retired eight of the final 10 batters he faced to go out on a good note. The right-hander missed over the first month of the campaign due to a groin injury and hasn't quite found his footing since returning May 6, posting a 5.97 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 19:10 K:BB through 31.2 innings.

Wainwright (2-1) took the loss Monday, allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks over five innings during a 7-0 defeat to the Royals. He struck out six.
EDGE Analysis
Wainwright completed five innings for a fifth straight start to begin his 2023 campaign and struck out a season-high six, but he suffered his first loss as St. Louis' offense was blanked by Kansas City's pitching staff. The veteran has allowed multiple runs in each of his appearances since being activated off the injured list and sports an ugly 6.15 ERA with a 1.71 WHIP and 16:8 K:BB across 26.1 innings. Given his history with the organization, it's safe to assume Wainwright's spot in the rotation is safe, but the Cardinals may need to make a few moves if they're going to fully snap out of this early-season slump.

Wainwright (2-0) picked up the win in Tuesday's 8-5 victory over the Reds, coughing up five runs on eight hits and a walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out two.
EDGE Analysis
Five of the hits off Wainwright went for extra bases, including Matt McLain's first career big-league homer in the third inning, but fortunately for the veteran right-hander the Cardinals' offense was firing on all cylinders. Wainwright has given up at least four runs in each of his four starts so far this season, and he'll carry an ugly 6.33 ERA and 10:6 K:BB through 21.1 innings into his next outing, likely to come this weekend in Cleveland.

Wainwright will make his next start against the Reds on Tuesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
EDGE Analysis
Wainwright was originally penciled in to start Wednesday's contest against Cincinnati, but he'll be moved up to Tuesday. Matthew Liberatore could make the start Wednesday, but his availability for that outing will be determined by whether he's used in the bullpen against the Dodgers on Sunday or the Reds on Monday.
