Yankees designated OF Vernon Wells for assignment. The Yanks needed to clear room on the 40-man roster, and it's no surprise Wells lost his spot because there really wasn't room for him. The 35-year-old got off to a hot start last season before fading badly, winding up with a .233/.282/.349 batting line and 11 homers over 130 games. He'll likely have to settle for a backup job somewhere.
