Beckett has a groin strain as well as the hip issue that landed him on the 15-day DL Friday, but manager Don Mattingly "anticipates" Beckett will pitch again this season, the Orange County Register's Bill Plunkett reports. When reports first surfaced that Beckett was headed to the DL, a report from MLB.com's Ken Grunick stated that Beckett's teammates thought he was done for the season and that Beckett was considering retirement, as the hip injury will not heal without surgery. However, as long as Mattingly is not confirming those concerns, we have to entertain the notion that Beckett could indeed pitch again in 2014. Mattingly said Beckett will need 10 to 14 days rest before the team reevaluates him.
