Medlen (elbow) signed a two-year contract with the Royals on Thursday that includes a mutual option for 2017. The Braves were pushing to re-sign Medlen to a two-year deal after declining to tender him a contract earlier this month, but a former Braves executive, current Royals GM Dayton Moore, swooped in and signed the right-hander away from Atlanta. Medlen underwent his second Tommy John surgery in March and missed the entire 2014 season as a result, but he went 15-12 with a 3.11 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in his first full season as a starter in 2013. It's uncertain when Medlen will be ready to return, but he could wind up playing a significant role in the Royals' rotation during the second half of the season.
